Reimbursement and compensation for cancelled flights: is it always possible?

In most cases, yes. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 provides for a compensation if the airline cancels your flight without adequate notice (up to 14 days before the departure date) or without offering a comparable travel alternative. However, there are exceptional circumstances (e.g. extreme weather conditions, air traffic controllers' strikes) that may release the company from its obligation to compensate.

What is the European regulation for cancelled flights?

Regulation (EC) 261/2004 states that, in the event of a cancelled flight, you are entitled to

  • Choose between reimbursement of the ticket or an alternative flight (re-routing).
  • Assistance during the waiting time (meals, drinks, phone calls) and, if necessary, overnight accommodation paid for by the company.
  • Economic Compensation up to €600, depending on the route and notice received.
  • Check the actual time notice of cancellation (if less than 14 days before the flight, you may be entitled to compensation).
  • Keep your travel documents (boarding pass, booking email, any cancellation messages).

The airline may not pay compensation if:

  • The cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances not under its control (natural disasters, sudden airspace restrictions, medical emergencies).
  • The flight was cancelled with more than 14 days' notice or you were offered a re-routing with a similar timetable to the original one.

However, even in these cases you are entitled to assistance (meals, hotels, transfers) if you get stuck at the airport.

If the cancelled flight caused the loss of a coincidence or extra expenses (taxis, hotels, new tickets), you may include these costs in your claim, provided they are properly documented. In some cases, the company may award you additional compensation for material damage.
