When you book a flight, you have at your disposal a number of safeguards established by European and international regulations. These rights ensure that, in the event of inefficiencies such as delays, cancellations or overbookingyou may receive assistance and, in many cases, financial compensation. What regulations protect air passengers?

Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004

In the European Union, the main reference is Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, which guarantees compensation in the event of:

  • Long delay (at least 3 hours on arrival)
  • Flight Cancellation
  • Denied boarding due to overbooking

Montreal Convention

At the international level, the Montreal Convention protects passengers against damage or loss of baggage and significant delays.

Reimbursement and compensation

When an air service disruption occurs, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 per passengerdepending on the route and length of the flight.

What are the passenger's rights in the event of problems with the flight?

Delayed flight

If the flight is delayed by at least 3 hours on arrival in the final destination, you can:

  • Claiming compensation established by EU law.
  • Obtaining assistance (food, drinks, telephone calls) and, if necessary, an overnight stay paid for by the company.

Flight cancelled

If your flight was cancelled with less than 14 days in advance respect the fixed departure date

  • You have the right to choose between the refund of the ticket or an alternative flight.
  • You may receive compensation variable pecuniary based on the length of the route.
  • The company must provide assistance (meals, hotel, transfers) if you get stuck waiting for the next flight.

Overbooking or denied boarding

In case you are denied boarding due to overbooking:

  • You can opt for a replacement flight or request reimbursement.
  • You may be entitled to compensation up to €600 depending on the kilometres of the route.

Lost or damaged luggage

In addition to flight-related problems, the Montreal Convention protects passengers in the case of baggage:

  • Lostyou can claim compensation for lost items or expenses incurred.
  • Damagedthe company is obliged to repair or compensate the damage.
  • DelayedIf your luggage arrives late and you are forced to buy basic necessities, you can claim reimbursement of documented expenses.

Right to assistance

Whatever the disservice (even if the flight was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions), airlines have an obligation to provide:

  • Meals and drinks (vouchers or refunds) if the flight has been delayed for at least 2 hours 
  • Telephone calls or Internet access
  • Hotel accommodation and transfersif necessary

What compensation could you get?

Financial compensation varies according to the distance of the flight:

250 € for short distances (up to 1,500 km).
400 € for medium-length routes (1,500 to 3,500 km).
600 € for flights over 3,500 km, if the delay exceeds 4 hours or in case of cancellation/denied boarding
300 € for flights over 3500 km, if the delay exceeds 3 hours but is less than 4 hours.

In addition to economic compensation, the company must guarantee assistance (meals, drinks, phone calls, accommodation) until you arrive at your destination.
