Reimbursement for missed connections: is it always possible?

If a delay or cancellation of the previous flight prevented you from catching your connecting flight, you may be able to obtain compensation. European legislation (EC Reg. 261/2004) covers cases wheredue to inefficiency on the part of the carrier, the passenger suffers overall delays and unforeseen expenses to reach the final destination.

What happens if I miss my connection due to a delay?
  • Keep documentationboarding passes, tickets and any evidence of the delay of the initial flight.
  • Request assistance at the airport: the company should provide you with information on an alternative flight or re-routing.
  • Check Regulation (EC) 261/2004If the delay resulted in a final arrival 3 or more hours later than the original time, you may be entitled to compensation.

The delay is assessed upon arrival at your final destination. If due to the first delayed flight you miss the second flight and arrive with 3 or more hours later than plannedyou are entitled to compensation up to 600 €depending on the length of the route.

  • Exceptional circumstancesextreme weather, medical emergencies, security restrictions or strikes outside the carrier.
  • Overly tight connection timesIf the time between flights was unreasonable, the airline may not be liable for damages, unless it sold the tickets in a single booking.

If you miss your connection due to delay or cancellation, the company must:

  • Organising an alternative flight (reprotection) at no additional cost.
  • Provide airport assistance (meals, drinks, possible overnight stay) if necessary.
  • Reimbursement of extra expenses (e.g. meals, hotels) if the situation is attributable to its management.
